Heard this commenatry on NPR on the way home yesterday. Mr. Pinkwater describes his experience hearing from God when he used to be involved in what he calls “a cult”. He describes the miracle of God waking him up one night to take care of a broken water line.

I was intrigued with this story of God caring to speak to those who seek Him. The word “cult” is generally a negative term. Such being the case, it is very interesting that Mr. Pinkwater, though not part of the ”cult” any longer still seems connected to God. He has apparently NOT thrown the proverbial baby out with the bath water. How very…dare I say…postmodern.

My ear slightly piqued when I saw the NPR audio for a Pinkwater commentary describing "his life in a cult" -- piqued because my blog for the past couple of weeks has been devoted to a "cult" of one sort. I knew from a previous commentary defending the government at Waco that Pinkwater was involved in a cult. The question I've wondered before and do now is -- what "cult"?

Look at his fiction, and you have Scientology in Alan Mendelsohn, Hare Khrisna in Young Adults, and if I knew more about various New Age organizations I'd know what The Last Guru is a take off from.
