How The Neddiad was written. With dance breaks. Probably not to the soundtrack of Aerosmith.

Does Your YA character need a psychiatrist?
Answer: S/he'd better, or it probably won't be a very interesting book.
Alan Mendelssohn, the Boy from Mars (Daniel Pinkwater) is a great older book with some wonderful psychiatrist scenes. I remember reading this in 5th or 6th grade and thinking that I wanted to see a psychiatrist after reading the book. I also (unsuccessfully) attempted to start a riot in my school following Alan Mendelssohn’s lead. Most people weren’t particularly surprised when I claimed to be from Mars.
Yeah, well... probably can't pull some of these things off.

"If you don't like this book, maybe your mind will entertain yourself by thinking about how much you like a Pinkwater book."
In the back matter for HOUND DOG TRUE the author states that originally the story started out as a picture book and then evolved into a novel. I read this before reading the book and all I could think about the entire time was how badly I want Daniel Pinkwater to turn his picture book UNCLE MELVIN into a novel. This really doesn’t have anything to do with HOUND DOG TRUE other than (the presence of an oddball uncle) but it does show that book didn’t capture my attention enough to even think about the narrative while reading it.

Erica Perl also loves... list of children's book, in one dimension of the "If you like, you might also love" line, authors that includes Pinkwater.

Another dimension of the "If you like, you'll also love": : What gave you the idea to mix history and science with children’s horror and comedy/adventure? ... authors of the Benjamin Franklinstein Series wearing Pinkwater influences on their sleeves.

And... another dimension of "if you like, you might also love" -- hm. There's a Pinkwater quote on the side.

Geek Role Models list.
Daniel M. Pinkwater, for proving that being cheerfully strange can in fact be one of the highest of virtues.
