“Robo-graders” have been in the news a lot lately, thanks to the Shermis and Hamner research that argues automated essay grading software performs just as well as humans. As University at Buffalo English professor Alex Reid contends, “If computers can read like people it’s because we have trained people to read like computers.”

State education commissioner John B. King defended the passage against initial media reports, stating the questions made more sense when compared to the full passage then mere snippets.
(Only 2 questions are truly nonsense after all.). Let's be clear, none of the animals were named Socrates and none claimed to be the wisest animal because it knew nothing.
Well, personally, I think the pineapple story is delightful and the Hare was obviously the wisest. That leaves only the one perplexing question, to which the most likely answer is that they ate the pinapple out of spite.
Now, when are we going to start throwing more weight into portfolio work? I had high hopes when in school that this was the direction we were going…
While standardized testing is generally pointless and harmful to the educational mission, it does have the virtue of teaching children that they will go through life being confronted with absurdities and judged by how they respond to them.

far from the "crap" that it's accused of being, and frankly, our eighth grade selves would have been thrilled to answer a reading comprehension question that didn't involve lemonade stands or the Industrial Revolution. -- The wisest animal? DEFINITELY the owl, people, (Hint: the "wisest" animal is ALWAYS the owl) (Ugh.)
